about

It all came about quite suddenly. Becca and I recognized that we needed to do some recording, but couldn't make the time. On Memorial Day we went down to Hinkley, Ohio to be with our friends Deb, Steve, and Aytch for the day. It was a lovely day with good food, good conversation, and great people. Becca wanted to see their chickens and we ended up falling in love with their barn.

Their barn was built sometime in the 1800s and is great. It's filled with all the things that a good barn should be filled with. Being dancers we thought it would be wonderful to have a dance in there, which led us right to the idea of playing music. Aytch grabbed her fiddle and let Becca's fingers run with it. We made the off hand comment "it would be really cool to play in here." Deb looked at us and said "We'd love it if you did - you provide the music, we'll provide the food."

We went down to record the following Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights (June 3, 4, and 5). We would arrive, share a wonderful meal, then walk up to the barn and record. It was an incredibly simple set up - two chairs, a guitar, a fiddle, two voices, a beard, a braid, some mason jars, and one mic. From Monday night's recording we loved the second take of Where the Water Meets the Sky - that's the take that is on the CD. Tuesday was a great night of recording and we were thrilled with how we played, but the audio got corrupted and we had to scrap it all. Wednesday we powered through and emerged having completed the other seven songs , a bottle of wine, a jar of sweet tea, a quart of strawberries, and had wonderful guests join us in the barn to listen in on the recording.

All of the audio was captured using a Tascam iM2 mic interfaced with an iPhone 4 running the PCMRecorder app provided by Tascam. The only editing that was done (using Audacity) was trimming the beginnings and the ends and doing our best match the volume levels between songs - what you hear (including Lily the toy poodle barking on What if She Knew) is the unadulterated raw audio from the barn, no tricks or tweaks.

We could not have done this without the incredible hospitality provided to us by Deb, Steve, and Aytch, and we owe them a huge debt of gratitude! We would have recorded eventually - that was inevitable, but with their support we were afforded the opportunity to craft something special!

about

Red Brick Rhoades Cleveland, Ohio

Red Chrosniak learned guitar to make his habit of doodling lyrics on old envelope backs both productive and sustainable. Becca Rhoades lends her improvisational fiddling skills and a little of her Texas drawl to the songs he writes. Red and Becca started playing together upon discovering their shared love of heart-free dancing, getting lost, rye whiskey, and making both mischief and music. ... more
